Quella tra Ed Rush & Optical è probabilmente la partnership più famosa della scena Drum and Bass mondiale. Considerati gli indiscussi maestri del genere, nella loro decennale carriera, ne hanno esplorato il lato più oscuro, chimico e neurale, tralasciando la gentilezza dei suoni Jazz, Funk e Reggae, a favore della carica della techno.
Inziano la loro collaborazione nel 1998 fondando l’etichetta discografica Virus Recordings per la quale pubblicano nello stesso anno il loro primo LP “Warmhole” considerato una pietra miliare per il genere D’n'B/Jungle. La consacrazione arriva nel 2000 con l’uscita del loro secondo LP “Creeps”. Con i successivi lavori “The Original Doctor Shade” (2003) e “Travel the Galaxy” (2010, anticipato dal fortunato singolo Chubrub) hanno spinto il genere verso il nuovo millennio, sperimentando ampiamente senza dimenticare il passato. Il loro sound oscuro e ipertecnologico è diventato in breve tempo un marchio di fabbrica alla quale si è ispirata l’intera comunità internazionale e che ha emozionato migliaia di persone in tutto il mondo.

Aeph has been slaying so caught up for an involved chat.

DB: How would you sum up your style?

Aeph: I stay true to myself and I follow my instincts, this is my style.

DB: ‘Bad Taste 5′ is a killer, and there’s some big moments from you on it…

A: I love the fact that in this 5th installment Vegas & Uman decided to give a chance to some new producers in the scene which is always a dangerous move when you are a big label. They show no concerns about it and this means that this album is 100% what the real Bad Taste is.

There’s a gang mentality about it too which I really like.

DB: Which tunes of yours are you the most proud of?

A: I’m a very hypercritical person but I quite enjoyed the last 2 singles I released (‘When You/Nightrider’ on Bad Taste Recordings and ‘Highway Thirteen/Hoedown’) because they are from a very clear vision. Having something so defined in my mind led me to manage every single aspect of the releases.

DB: What is the one thing in your studio you can’t live without?

A: My Adam monitors and my new ultra big comfortable vip office chair.

DB: What films do you like and of course which soundtracks?

A: John Carpenter’s ‘Assault On Precinct 13′, Goblin with ‘Tenebre’, Vangelis for ‘Bladerunner’, everything from Ennio Morricone, the beautiful ‘Goodbye My Friend’ by Guido & Maurizio De Angelis, Fabio Frizzi, Videodrome’s ost by Howard Shore, Alan Silvestri, Franco Micalizzi, Daft Punk from the latest Tron… Seriously, too many!

DB: Ah, Trinity connection there…

A: I can’t tell you exactly why I like these works and how they influenced my music because it’s really just about feelings. I don’t ask myself how they made them, it’s just a mere fact of perception. This is why I love soundtracks.

DB: Do you use real synths or software?

A: There’s not much of a difference right now. I mean of course there is a difference between a very expensive Moog and the vst version but the difference isn’t worth the cost in my opinion. If I’d have to go analog I’d prefer to spend my money on an Sherman Filterbank and a couple of Empirical Labs Distressors.

DB: Another synth question: If synthesis really means that you can achieve any sound, why use different ones? Isn’t one enough?

A: It’s a matter of how many oscillators you can use, how many wave forms available you can load, how many and what kind of fxs available and the vst response to different range frequencies. I can make a cool bassline with Sylenth without any problem but I would never have the same possibilities I’ve got with Massive which allows me to work better with wave forms and filters plus it responds better to low frequencies.

If I’d need something more ‘trance-y’ I’ll go for Sylenth because I know I can get that kind of vibe in a second. If I’d need something less digital I’ll go for Omnisphere because it allows you to combine samples from vintage synths or real instruments samples with digital oscillators. Every producer’s got their favourites.

DB: My studio session question. Which session in time would you like to be a fly on the wall at? Or with who?

A: I’d love to spend a day with Erik Aadahl or Amon Tobin just to name a couple.

With the buzz of the Paradise opening party still ricocheting around the island, Jamie Jones and Hot Creations reveal the rest of the line-ups for their white-hot residency. From now until the end of September, some of the best names in House and Techno will join the party at Paradise.

Taking place every Thursday at one of Ibiza’s most loved venues, Paradise has transformed DC10 into a haven of musical indulgence. Originally home to the infamous Circoloco, DC10 has spent the past decade evolving into one of the most globally acclaimed club venues.

Paradise opened in fantastic form last week seeing a roadblock of talent including Art Department, Benoit & Sergio, Richy Ahmed and of course, Jamie Jones finishing the night in style! DC10 was given a magical new look for the night and everyone lucky enough to be there will share a similar story.

The August line-ups include sets from New York duo Wolf & Lamb, a welcome return for Art Department and Rush Hour Records’ Tom Trago. The finest in UK House will be represented by Luke Solomon, rising producer Julio Bashmore, Hessle Audio boss Ben UFO and Disco styles from Crazy P. International talent sees the legendary Metro Area from New York, Polish duo Catz & Dogz along with German DJ legend, DJ Koze.

In September Paradise gets the finest in Chicago House with everyone from Cajmere, Crosstown Rebel front man, Damain Lazarus and P-Funk flavored Soul Clap making their way down to DC10. Deniz Kurtel makes her appearance at Paradise along with the rapidly emerging, Dusky. Robert James steps up to bring his UK House sound, along with Denney and US pair No Regular Play.

Paradise not only boasts a fantastic location and solid array of residents but many names you would not usually expect to see on an Ibiza line-up. For up and coming acts, like Julio Bashmore and Dusky, this will be one of their first appearances on the island and Paradise is more than ready for them. As well as opening the gates for the new talent coming through, Paradise has landed some names that have had massive influence on the scene. Artists like Metro Area and Cajmere have had a phenomenal impact and it’s great to see them playing in Ibiza this season. Plus let’s not forget the return to Ibiza of Ibiza legend, DJ Harvey! 

With a career in music leading back to the mid 80s, Harvey started as a drummer in a Punk band whose music was picked up by BBC Broadcast pioneer, John Peel. After leaving England at an early age to travel the world, Harvey discovered his talents as a DJ. On returning to the UK he found himself amongst the growing London clubbing scene where Harvey landed residencies at clubs like Ministry of Sound and Blue Note, to name a few. Returning to the island for the first time in 10 years, Harvey’s appearance at Paradise has become one of the most anticipated performances in Ibiza this year!
